Kerry NH Visit voReturn to index of stories... |
Let's begin with National Politics. Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry was in NH this weeK -- his first time back to the granite state since his party's nomination. He told the crowd in Derry it was good to be home. The Massachusetts Senator held what he called a "front porch" discussion in Derry with voters -- on his plan to lower health care costs for all Americans. Kerry attacked the President's response to health care in the United States and he promised to create a new health care plan if elected. Showing once again how important New Hampshire is to the candidates- earlier this month President Bush paid a visit to the Scam-an farm in Stratham. Mr. Bush is spending the next few days at his ranch in Texas where he's working on the speech he'll be delivering at the Republican National Convention in New York in just about 2 weeks. Q Kerry's latest NH visit part of a 2-week campaign swing to talk economic issues including HEALTH care. Those attending say in a TIGHT race the issue of HEALTH care could put him over the top? Agree?? |
Heed ReportReturn to index of stories... |
Yet, Another Twist in the Peter Heed Resignation Controversy. It seems the prosecutor who cleared the former A-G of criminal misconduct wants a REVIEW of whether the Governor & Safety commissioner "improperly" interfered with his investigation. Sullivan County Attorney Marc Hathaway wants to know if either official urged Heed to resign -- and did Cmsr Dick Flynn leak confidential information to Heed and the Governor. Heed-- who resigned before the investigation was complete-- says the Governor and Dick Flynn told him he faced serious allegations about sexual assault and harassment. New Questions have also been raised as to whether police were asked to slow or stop the investigation into allegations that Heed inappropriately touched a woman on the dance floor at a conference on domestic and sexual violence. Q JEFF: The Governor must have thought this Controversy was behind him, NOT SO!! Q MIKE/ LARS: Heed says Benson was worried that Democrats might use the A-G's actions against him in the upcoming election. Flynn says the Governor asked him to talk to Heed and seek his resignation, Benson remembers it differently. WHAT ARE WE TO MAKE OF THIS? |
EnterasysReturn to index of stories... |
More Troubles at Enterasys Network -- the computer networking company is the main successor to Cabletron Systems -- which Governor Craig Benson co-founded. A former Enterasys executive has plead guilty to fraud that prosecutors say cost investors more than one-BILLION Dollars. 5 executives have been charged to date. The latest, 45-year-old Gail Spence Luacaw of Newfields admitted that in the fall of 2001 she "doctored" the books with other Enterasys officials to inflate the company's revenues to meet Wall Street projections. Craig Benson was a corporate director at the time of the incident. Officials have shown no indication of charging him with wrongdoing. Q JEFF: This has got to be just another dark cloud for the Governor who has touted his business acumen as one of the reasons he should be NH's CEO. |
Governors ForumReturn to index of stories... |
The 4 gubernatorial candidates in New Hampshire have agreed to participate in a forum on September 7-th on EDUCATION funding in the state. Incumbent Republican Craig Benson and his primary opponent, Charles Tarbell, along with Democrats John Lynch and Paul McEachern will take part. The forum is sponsored by the Coalition Communities, which are challenging the state's school funding system. The 34-member coalition seeks to end the system of education funding that forces property-rich or "donor" towns to send money to the state for redistribution to property-poor or "receiver" towns. Q Education Funding continues to be one of the TOP concerns of NH voters and a defining issue in the Governor's Race. |
Kindergarten Return to index of stories... |
Governor Benson is proposing giving out 2- thousand dollar vouchers for kids to attend kindergarten. His challengers have denounced the plan. Democrat John Lynch's campaign calls it a "fraud" and Democrat Paul McEachern questioned how Benson would pay for the vouchers when state agencies are being asked to cut their budgets. Q The state does not mandate public kindergarten -- Should We? |
Mayor ShawReturn to index of stories... |
The city of Manchester will say goodbye to former Mayor Robert Shaw this weekend. The well known politician was killed Tuesday on Interstate 93 in Manchester. Police say the 70-year-0ld Shaw may have stalled his car in the middle of the highway when a car driven by a 71-year-old Manchester man struck the vehicle. Shaw was mayor of the state's largest city from 19-84 to 19-88. He served as a Republican and later failed to win a third term while running as a Democrat. Shaw ran for governor in 19-88 and was defeated by Judd Gregg in the Republican primary. He most recently made an unsuccessful run for governor in 19-98. Q Certainly a tragedy -- what is Shaw best remembered for? Any personal recollections? Described as a hands on kind of mayor. Q Shaw was a native of ME+ -- spent most of his adult life living and working in Manchester. Why wasn't he successful in reaching higher office? DID SWITCHING parities HURT Him politicially. What's the history there? ======================= ROBERT SHAW -- just celebrated his 5oth wedding anniversary. He was a Korean War Veteran, and a longtime businessman in Manchester. He owned a service station and a sub shop. A funeral Mass will be said Saturday at 10 a-m at Saint Marie's Church. ============= |
NH Vets Health CareReturn to index of stories... |
The Department of Veterans Affairs says it plans to build a new outpatient clinic in Rochester. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony Principi made the announcement Thursday. The 76-hundred square foot clinic will be equipped to serve up to four-thousand patients. The new clinic will replace a smaller one in Wolfeboro and provide better access for veterans on the Seacoast and southwestern Maine. The clinic will open in the spring of 2005. Q good news for Veterans who will no longer have to travel to Manchester?! Q It will also take the pressure off a Portsmouth clinic already operating at capacity?! |
GoogleReturn to index of stories... |
In the most highly anticipated Wall Street debut since the heady days of the dot-com boom, shares of Google surged nearly 20 percent on their first day of public trading Thursday -- as the quirky Internet company completed its much-hyped initial stock offering. The 6-year-old dot-com which was dreamed up in a garage -- is now trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the symbol G-O-O-G. Despite the first-day jump, the debut generated much less money than the company envisioned after it launched an unorthodox auction designed to open the stock beyond large investors who typically get first crack at new stock issues. Q LARS: You're a computer buff -- can we expect bigger and better things now from google -- given the infusion of cash. |
